Growing up in Japanese Colonial Period‚ Chen Cheng-po (1895-1947) was a famous senior artist in Taiwan‚ as well as the first Taiwanese whose oil paintings were selected in the well-known “Imperial Art Exhibition (Teiten)” at that time. During the study in Japan‚ Chen Cheng-po had held many exhibitions of his artworks and was employed to teach in Shanghai for 4 years after graduation. In 1933‚ he came back to his hometown Chaiyi given the tense relations between China and Japan‚ and was executed in 1947 by shooting at the age of 52 due to the 228 Incident.

Chen Cheng-po left various archives and artworks with different materials‚ providing important research materials for the history of Taiwanese art. The Archives of Institute of Taiwan History of Academia Sinica is currently proceeding with digital archives and the establishment of databases. In addition‚ the Academia Sinica Digital Center has launched the website “Starting Out from 23.5°N: Chen Cheng-po” (Picture 1) this year to combine these paintings and archives with location‚ information of time and space‚ and interpersonal relationships under 4 dimensions of his personal life‚ artistic accomplishments‚ environmental changes‚ and social relationships with 10 chapters in total‚ comprehensively examining the artist's short life.

When entering the home page‚ you can go to the first chapter “The Timeline Chapter” (Picture 2)‚ using various information including Chen Cheng-po's important paintings‚ photos with family and friends‚ archives‚ and information of time and space to introduce his life events. The second chapter “The artwork Chapter” (Picture 3) selects 46 important artworks during Chen Cheng-po's 4 periods of creation. Each artwork can be enlarged and has detailed introduction for you to further browse‚ and the location of the artwork is marked on the map. Meanwhile‚ the timeline presents important events of individual‚ Taiwan history‚ and the history of Taiwanese art before and after the artist creates artworks‚ allowing users to understand the artworks themselves as well as their related information of time and space. Being selected for Teiten means that Chen Cheng-po's artworks are recognized by the painting circle‚ so the third chapter “Teiten” introduces his selected paintings‚ relevant reports‚ and letters.
