Recently‚ Dengue Fever has been rampant in Kaohsiung. The government has come up with the creative idea of using sea water to fight against the larvae of mosquitoes. If this were to happen twenty or thirty years ago or even earlier‚ people would ask Wang Ye‚ who could eliminate plagues and remove disasters‚ for help rather than government officials. Wang Ye is one of the major gods in Taiwan’s folk beliefs. In the era when the public health was difficult to control‚ the epidemic outbreak was considered a punishment and warning given by plague demons‚ and only by welcoming Wang Ye for worship could plagues be eliminated and disasters be removed. Wang Ye travels by Royal Boat and patrols regions on behalf of god. The believers pray to Wang Ye for protecting their homeland through serial rituals of building the Royal Boat‚ inviting Wang Ye‚ holding a parade‚ entertaining Wang Ye‚ and lastly sending off Wang Ye by leaving the Royal Boat to drift along the river (travel along the river on earth) or by burning the Royal Boat (travel along the river in heaven). In 2014‚ Academia Sinica Digital Center (ASDC) held “Patrols of Royal Lords Exhibition” to display photos that were collected in “Cyber Island” ‚ aiming to present diverse beliefs in Taiwan through images of Royal Boat rituals recorded by four photographers.
