As the shuttle moving back and forth with yarn of ramie in all colors weaving across one other‚ the woof squeezer is tightening the linen repeatedly along with the sound of rataplan arousing in deep to harmony with the rhythm from the bottom of heart‚ bringing out a story of aboriginal women's lives on the looms. The annual exhibition of the Academia Sinica Digital Center ─── “Between the Warp and Weft ── Weaving the Aboriginal Life Exhibition” come off from 9/16 to 12/27 in 2015 at National Library of Public Information. The content is displayed interactively by means of digital archive images and technology‚ physical clothing and weaving relics‚ leading the audience into the aboriginal world of weaving and experiencing exquisite and fascinating cultural scenery under the colorful clothing. Taking aboriginal women’s life experiences as the warp and the weaving clothes as the weft‚ this exhibition interleaving display the weaving tradition and life etiquette and conventions of Pan-Atayal (Atayal‚ Truku‚ Seediq)‚ Paiwan‚ Kavalan‚ Pan-Siraya. The exhibition is divided into six areas: Entrance Imagery‚ Birth‚ Growth‚ Marriage‚ Burial and Revitalization. From aboriginal women’s view‚ elaborating their learning of weaving and making clothes with their mothers in the childhood. From cloth pattern to weaving gorgeous wedding dresses for themselves and making clothes for their families and children‚ this weaving skill is inherited between mothers and daughters‚ laying out women’s life experiences‚ inheritance of weaving skills‚ group life etiquette behind this tradition‚ and the rise and fall and revitalization of the weaving culture. In order to enrich the content of the exhibition and promote Taiwan digital archives‚ we handpicked nearly a hundred pieces of digital archive images from the Institute of Taiwan History at Academia Sinica‚ the Institute of Ethnology at Academia Sinica‚ the Department of Anthropology at National Taiwan University‚ National Taiwan Museum‚ and overseas digital archive resources from University of Tokyo and Wellcome Library in England. Interactive fitting simulator of aboriginal costumes‚ developed by the Academia Sinica Digital Center‚ is displayed in regard to the result of value-adding to digital archives. Visitors can select a specific ethnic group’s traditional costume freely in front of the display area and have the try-on experience instantly‚ and it can be moreover uploaded to social networking sites‚ such as Facebook‚ via scanning the QR code. We expect‚ through this interactive display‚ visitors can understand the styles and features of aboriginal peoples.  Abridged general view of interactive fitting simulator of aboriginal costumes In addition to digital archive images‚ this exhibition has some precious weaving objects borrowed from Taiwanese aboriginal tribes‚ including Atayal’s weaving craftsman Yuma Taru and Yetong Workshop’s traditional weaving costumes‚ ancient Atayal looms‚ noble bridal attire handmade by a princess of Paiwan from the Jialan tribe in Jinfeng Township in Taitung for her eldest daughter‚ and Siraya’s bridal attire of Sinckan reproduced by reference to the century-old historic images. Through the interactive display of both digital archives and weaving objects‚ the aboriginal culture and digital archive resources get promotion and the public is drawn closer to the knowing of the content of Taiwanese aboriginal tribes’ weaving culture.
