According to the description in Investiture of the Gods‚ Thousand Miles Eye (Qianli Yan) and With-the-Wind Ear (Shunfeng Er) adopted the aliases of Gao Ming and Gao Jue and joined the Shang Dynasty army with which they fought against Jiang Zi-ya and other followers of King Wu of the Zhou Dynasty. When the Shang and Zhou forces met in battle the two brothers were able to predict the movement of the Zhou army‚ which suffered a heavy defeat. Realizing something strange had happened Jiang Zi-ya took out a demon mirror and held it up to the two to reveal their true appearance—they were two god generals from the era of the Yellow Emperor. Thousand Miles Eye can see anything within a range of 1000 miles‚ With-the-Wind Ear can hear even a whisper 1000 miles away. The next day the Zhou forces came together in formation and waved flags to obstruct the view and beat drums loudly so they could not be heard‚ thus rendering Gao Ming and Gao Jue’s powers useless. After the two were killed in battle their spirits did not dissipate and they continued to disturb and harm the local people. They were then taken on by Mazu as her protector generals who stand in front of her‚ from this time assisting Mazu drive away evil. It is said that Mazu is the incarnation of Bodhisattva Guanyin.  Thousand Miles Eye can see anything within a range of 1000 miles‚ With-the-Wind Ear can hear even a whisper 1000 miles away‚ their powers matching the meaning of “guan” and “yin”. (In Chinese guan means to see and yin means sound.)
